Film History

Film History

Film history was created in the 1890s. It was the era when cameras with motion picture options were discovered and when film companies were prepared to do business. Films of that time were very short; to be precise, they were a minute long or even under one minute because the technology of that time had its limits. They also didn’t have sound, and this was the case until 1927. During the first decade, the film was starting as something that wasn’t very popular to a large -scale industry for entertainment. The films were much longer.

They were several minutes long, and they had several shots. The first camera that was able to rotate was made in 1898. In 1897 the first important studios were built. And after that, we had the introduction of special effects. The films with more action continuity began to develop, and action across shots was possible after implementation of this technology. In the 1900s the first close-up camera was discovered because the action across successive shots was being used in continuity. Most of the films that were made in those years were called chase movies.

Chase films

Animation movies were created in 1899. The first long movie was made in 1906, and it was produced in Australia production. The first theater showing that was a feature length was The Nickelodeon movie.

It was shown in Pittsburg in 1905. Actors started to receive payments for their acting by 1910 and that opened the gateway for the actor stars. American movies had the biggest market share in the European countries except for France, and in Australia.

New film discoveries

Artificial lighting was among the first which were introduced. Then we had fire effects and lightning called low-key. It was used in sinister scenes where the enhanced atmosphere was needed. Films were growing, and more and more specialist writers were involved because they were needed to produce much larger and different in a way. Those stories were derived from novels or plays. The form was needed which was able to be put on a reel and which was easier to understand by the public.

And the audience wasn’t familiar with this type of storytelling. The development of genres had begun. There were divisions, and those were called categories. First, they had comedy and drama. Later these two genres begin to divide into sub genres. And that is how modern film and series slowly have begun to develop into a modern type of film as we know it today.

In that same year, fifteen independent studios were built in Hollywood. Hollywood was automatically in the same category with film and film industry. The word Hollywood was often part of the colloquial speech, and it referred to the whole industry.

Charlie Chaplin Studios

The Chaplin studios were near the La Brea and De Longpre Avenues. It was close to the Sunset Boulevard. The compound was created in 1917. The company was bought many times after 1953. Some of them were Kling Studios. They housed the production of Superman series. Those with Reeves. They also used it for Red skeleton franchise.

Hollywood sign

The sign is originally read Hollywood land. The sign was built in 1923, and it was intended for the development of new housing in those hills above Hollywood. Unfortunately, the sign was deteriorating until 1949 when the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce made a suggestion to repair the last four letters and to fix the rest of the letters completely. The sign is at the top of Mount Lee, and now it is a trademark that is registered which can’t be used without exclusive permission of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They also manage the Walk of Fame. On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards took place. It was a presentation ceremony. It was held when the banquet took place in the Blossom Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Yes, that was on Hollywood Boulevard. There were 250 people in there, and cost of a ticket was 10$.

The Most Important Jobs In Film Business

The Most Important Jobs In Film Business

The producer

We often ask ourselves, what is the highest paid job in the film industry. One of those jobs is a job of a producer. The producer can be a writer or an investor or the idea man or even a manager. The producer can be even all of these mentioned above and all in one. In the film branch, the main or head producer is called the executive producer. He/her is responsible for each and every part or phase of making a film. Those phases include pre-production, production, and post-production. In pre-production, the job of a producer is to read scripts and decides which idea can be and will be implemented in the script. Writers, agents and directors are the brains behind those ideas. When the idea is chosen, the producer now has to raise and collect the money for the project.

After that, the producer needs to hire a screenwriter, director, production staff, art directors, casting directors and camera and lightning editors and crews. It is very important to stay in the budget and sometimes it’s not easy. To be honest, it is never easy because, after all that, the production and post-production are coming on schedule. Because of all those things, it is very tough to be a producer. It is, in fact, a great responsibility.

People who are in charge of overseeing the artistic vision of the movie are called directors. They are not a part of financial planning for the project unless they are producer-director types. The important part in pre-production is that the director works closely with the rest of the crew especially with screenwriter and the producer so that he could figure out what the best way to represent the script in a visual manner. If the director is an experienced one, he will have a set or a list of cinematographers, art directors, casting directors, cameramen and believe it or not, actors. The director has the final word or says even if the producer is scouting for a location or hiring. One of the jobs of a director is coaching of actors.

It is very important so that actors could do their best to read the script and express their emotions in those lines.

If you have preferences or you would like to become a producer or a director, bear in mind that it is a very stressful job and you need to be dedicated to those jobs because you will have a lot of money and a big responsibility.
